HISTORY

Background: Egypt is an ancient civilization located in Northeastern Africa with over 88 million inhabitants. Egypt was able to flourish as a civilization because of its ability to adapt to the conditions along the Nile River. The ancient Egyptians were known for their incredible contruction techniques which included pyramids, temples, and obelisks. Along with their unique construction techniques this civilization also effectively created a system of mathematics, medicine, irrigation and agricultural ways and new form of literature which has allowed it to grow into the nation it is today. 

 

Weather: Egypt has a hot desert climate usually with extremely dry weather except along the northern Mediterranean coast which receives rainfall during winter. Although Eygypt's weather may not be the most enjoyable for some people, it is a highly desirable place to visit because of its unbelievable architexture and culture. 

 

Sports: Some of the most popular modern Egyptian sports played today include wrestling, weightlifting, fishing, rowing, long jump, shooting, boxing, javelin throw, tennis, football, and beach handball which some are even competed internationally. 

 

Food and Dress: Egyptians make heavy use of legumes and vegetables with almost every meal. Bread is also the backbone of almost every meal consumed in Egypt along with beans and rice. Most main courses include a mixture of lentels, rice, pasta, and other ingredients. The meat consumed in their main courses inlcude chicken, beef, and fish. Women in Egypt wear wide dresses called "tob sebleh" while men usually wear a long shirt called "gallibaya".

 

Fun Facts: 

  • Tug of War was once apart of the Olympic Games. It took place at five different Olympic Games between the years of 1900-1920.

  • After the 1920 games Tug of War was removed from the Olympics along with 33 other sports because the IOC decided there were too many sports and too many participants competing

  • Tug of War is now currently recognized as a sport by the IOC (International Olympic Committee) and is held every four years at the World Games, which are for sports not in the Olympics.
